Management: Rick Fire

 Relations between employees and their management significantly impact performance of the companies. The good and favorable working atmosphere often leads to the implementation of tasks on the basis of teamwork and lead to their successful completion. However, Rick Fire and Lew Newman established the hidden conflict which later resulted into the collapse of the deal with Footlocker. The poor communication between employees and ineffective system of management of the new ideas made the conflict between Rick Fire and Lew Newman possible while the solution to the issue should be developed through consultations between Dave Brown, Les Newman, and Rick Fire.

The conflict situation between Rick Fire and Les Newman became possible due to the ineffective system of communication inside the company and the lack of interpersonal skills of the two individuals. Primarily, one should state that the conflict was rather unnatural. It emerged when Rick Fire informed Dave Brown of Les’ reluctance towards the development of the new alternative channels (Rick Fire). At the same time, the core issue was that Rick could not present the idea to any other person than Les to find about its potential. Therefore, the important process of development of the new channels centered on the decisions of one figure. For sure, the company should have developed the mechanisms for employees and management of the free exchange and ideas and their presentation to the team of managers. In this case, the influence of every single person should have been reduced, while the ideas should be considered by the teams rather than single individuals.

The other problem was the lack of interpersonal communication skills of Rick and Les. Primarily, Rick did not manage to convince Lew Newman that the idea was good. However, Les also failed to criticize the incentive so that Rick could realize its poor sides, but decided to reject it without the clear explanations. Consequently, the significant level of misunderstanding between individuals did not help them to overcome the issue, while the fact that Rick resorted to the third parties made Les angry. Later, he did not participate in the project, but came to the last meeting with Footlocker to ruin the deal.

Undoubtedly, in order to resolve the problem, Rick Fire and Les Newman should resort to the third parties – Dave Brown and Karen French. In this case, Dave Brown should receive information from all the employees about the situation. Primarily, they should mutually work to complete the deal with Footlocker and other sport apparel chains. In this case, Les Newman should participate in all stages in order to have no chance to reject the conditions of the contract developed by Rick and representatives of the other company. Thus, they should work as a team to solve the problems caused by the conflict. At the same time, Dave Brown should monitor the performance of the team and follow the procedure of negotiations. What is more, he should consider the formation of the new system to deliver ideas from employees to the senior management. The system should include the clear mechanism for transmitting proposals to managers and their collective consideration during the meetings. In this case, the personal influence of managers will be reduced, while the quality of ideas will be measured on the basis of the mutual decisions.

One can see that the core issue of the company’s problems is the lack of teamwork on different levels, and its introduction can resolve the current issue and prevent similar problems in the future. Primarily, Les Newman and Rick Fire should communicate the issue to Dave Brown and start working on the development of the contracts together. At the same time, Dave Brown should introduce the new system to consider the ideas offered by employees to the senior managers at the group meetings to decrease the influence of the personal factor.
